Terry’s exciting adventure, in search of his twin brother, might just solve the mystery of where the other sock goes.
Everyone, at some point, comes across an odd sock! And, it’s one of life’s great mysteries as to where the other sock goes. This story might just solve that mystery, and hopefully encourage our little ones to pair up their socks, when they take them off at night.
Terry Towelling hadn’t always been a lonely, sad sock… in-fact, you could say he’d had quite an exciting life.
In the past, he’d been to some very exotic places with his brother Sid, and shared lots of fun times together. They would dance together, run together, laugh together, and always… at the end of the night… snuggle up, in their special draw, and fall asleep together.
But one day, that all changed, when somehow, Terry and Sid got separated. And now, somewhere in a dark lonely place, in a bedroom, (a bit like yours), lies a sad little odd sock, missing his lovely twin brother.
So Terry sets off, on an adventurous journey in search for his twin brother Sid.
Along the way he meets an odd-ball mix of other socks who help him with his search; There’s Ozzie a rugby sock, Trevor a football sock, Virginia a tennis sock, Barrington a business sock, Basil a bed sock, and Wolfgang an Austrian ski sock.
Their search culminates at the old rubbish dump, (complete with a giant sock-eating snail), here they are confronted by a nasty looking gang of socks, where their leader, (a particularly smelly character), goes nose to nose (or should I say toe-to-toe?) with one of Terry’s new friends.
There’s a nice little twist at the end of the story, that I hope your little one’s will love, and maybe you’ll also find out – just what happens to the those missing socks.
Hi, my name is Russ James and I’m the author and illustrator of Terry – The Little Odd Sock.
The book is based on bedtime story I used to tell my Nephews, (some 35 years ago).
The original draft story, and sketches of the characters, were created during a long, cold and arduous – 24 hour coach trip – to an Austrian Ski Resort, back in 1986!!
On my return from skiing – my career as a graphic designer dominated my Monday to Friday… Then, I got married, started my own small business, and become the father to two boys, which meant evenings and weekends were now also very hectic.
So, a bit like the main character in my book… the first draft, and initial sketches, lay forgotten in a dark place, gathering dust for years.
A few weeks before Christmas (2022), I came across the book, and decided, it’s about time I let Terry see daylight.
It’s taken a few months, with plenty of late nights, and cups of coffee, but now the book is finally finished…
The illustrations are done (all 28 of them to be precise), the story has been tweaked, re-tweaked, and tested on a small group of trusted people – (including my Nephew, who I originally told the story too… and his own little boy)!
Terry, The Litlle Odd Sock – has been a long time coming, but I’m really please with the finished result, and I cannot wait to share it with everyone in its full ‘Hardcover’ glory.
My aim is to print small batches of the book (100 each time), and to donate 25 books to Children’s Hospitals/Hospices and Local Primary Schools.
I’ve had interest from 2 book publishers to take Terry to the wider world, and I have already started writing and illustrating a series of follow up books, each of which tells the story behind the other characters we meet during Terry’s adventure.
